Sisters of the Visitation
Our life and work
Teaching in parish and diocesan schools, nursing and community health care, and visiting families in rural parishes.
Our charism
Like Mary, who went in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth, we go out to those who wait for a visit: children who need a school, the sick who need care, and families who need someone to listen. We pray together each morning and evening, and carry that prayer into our work.
Founded by Mother Mary Bernadette Iheanacho · 1962
Our founder
The congregation began in Larkmere in 1962, when Mother Mary Bernadette Iheanacho and four companions opened a small school beside the mission church that later became the cathedral. The first sisters made their vows in 1966. In the years that followed they opened a convent in Cedarvale and, at the request of the parish, a mission house and clinic in Amberfield. Today about thirty sisters live in three houses and serve in schools, in health care and in the parishes of the archdiocese.

Is God calling you to this life?
Are you a young Catholic woman who feels drawn to prayer and to serving others? Come and see. We welcome visitors to the motherhouse for a weekend of prayer and community life. Formation begins with a year as an aspirant, then a year as a postulant and two years in the novitiate before first vows. Write to our vocations director with any question, however small.
