A candle is a prayer that goes on burning after we have gone home. It says: I was here, I trusted, and I left my petition with God.

The first Christians lit lamps at the tombs of the martyrs. We do the same when we light a candle for someone who has died, or for a sick child, or for an exam. It costs a little, and the cost is part of the prayer.
